 "Out of Sequence: Underrepresented Voices in American Comics"

Co-curated by John Jennings and Damian Duffy, this exhibition showcases American sequential art that steps outside the traditional bounds of the medium by focusing on historical and contemporary women and minority comic creators.

John Jennings is an associate professor in the School of Art and Design while Damian Duffy is an Illinois graduate student and editor-in-chief of the Eye Trauma Comix online anthology. From 1-4 p.m. Damian Duffy and John Jennings will host a Gallery Conversation with Nancy Goldstein, author of Jackie Ormes: The First African American Woman Cartoonist (2008), Andrei Molotiu, abstract comics creator and curator, Trina Robbins, comics creator and historian, and Ashley A. Woods, independent comics creator.

School of Music alumna Sheila C. Johnson is the executive producer of this documentary film sharing the triumphant stories of three women who rise above racial and gender barriers to make social changes throughout their countries of origin.  This inspirational and moving film premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, N.Y.
